Adult acute myeloid leukemia is a kind of cancer wherein the bone marrow makes abnormal myeloblasts, red blood cells, or platelets. Normally, the bone marrow makes blood stem cells that develop in to mature blood cells with time. A blood stem cell might become a myeloid stem cell or a lymphoid stem cell. The lymphoid stem cell grows into a white blood cell. Red blood cells that carry oxygen along with other supplies to all tissues of the body. In AML, the myeloid stem cells often develop into a kind of immature white blood cell called myeloblasts. The myeloblasts in AML are irregular and don’t become healthful white blood cells.

Too many stem cells develop into irregular red blood cells or platelets. These irregular white blood cells, red blood cells, or platelets will also be called leukemia cells or blasts. Leukemia cells can build right up in the bone marrow and blood therefore there is less room for healthful white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. The leukemia cells may spread outside the blood to other areas of the body, including the nerve system, skin, and gums. There are very different subtypes of AML.
